Exploring the Natural Wonders of Vanuatu

Exploring the Natural Wonders of Vanuatu

Although Vanuatu has a long and rich history, it has only been an independent island nation for just over thirty years. Perhaps this is why it is considered to be well off the beaten path of trendy tourist spots, but this archipelago of 85 tiny islands in the South Pacific, only 65 of which are inhabited, has an amazing amount of things to do and see which is quickly making it one of the most popular places to visit. From flirting with danger to lounging in the sun, there will be something to occupy your days and nights when vacationing in Vanuatu.

A Land Where Old and New Live Side by Side

When staying in Vanuatu, the first thing to understand is that this truly is a land of contradictions. One moment you will be in the teeming capital city of Port Vila with all its modern amenities and within mere minutes you can be exploring the breathtakingly beautiful natural wonders which have been left virtually unchanged since time immemorial. Although some choose to stay in Vanuatu resorts near to Port Vila, others prefer more isolated accommodations in Vanuatu to take in some of the island’s natural wonders. Tourists are thrilled to learn that this is a world where men still hunt with a bow and arrows and women can be seen in their traditional grass skirts.

Diving in Head First

You can dive in head first, literally as well as figuratively, as Vanuatu is known for being one of the most alluring dive sites in the world. Many diving aficionados come simply to dive to the SS President Coolidge which was sunk in 1942 and is renowned for being one of the best, if not the very best, dives anywhere in the world. Much of the ship is still accessible, even underwater, and what a spectacular site it presents! Located off the coast, quite near Luganville, this is a popular wreck from WWII which makes for an amazing day of underwater exploration.

Flirting with Danger

If diving isn’t your forte, yet you would like a bit of excitement, try walking the rim of an actual active volcano! The island of Tanna is quite famous for Mount Yasur, its active volcano. Checking out this majestic mountain can be stunning, depending on the current level of volcanic activity. If you venture to go after nightfall you just might be able to see an exciting fireworks display like none you’ve ever witnessed. This is a result of gigantic pieces of red hot magma and molten rock shooting out of the crater and illuminating the night sky.

See the World's One and Only Underwater Post Office

Vanuatu is also home to the one and only post office that is actually located underwater! This special post office receives approximately 20,000 visitors each year since it opened back in 2003. Professional divers run the underwater branch and the postcards are waterproofed. People often travel to Vanuatu just to get into their snorkeling gear and see this wonderfully unusual place.

Mingle With the Locals

When it comes to mingling with the locals, a Vanuatu resort or hotel in Port Vila may a place to start. This city is located on the main island, Efate and is home to roughly 40,000 people. There is a wonderful and quite colorful market there that is set in the open air and sells everything from fresh produce to local handcrafted pieces. The marketplace is open almost every day and has much to offer in the way of cultural souvenirs and handcrafted gifts. From your Vanuatu accommodation in the city, you can catch a sea plane to take you over to other islands you might like to explore.

It truly does not matter which of the three main islands you choose when staying in Vanuatu as navigating around to the different attractions is quite simple. There are a number of travel options including car rentals, mini busses and of course seaplanes to explore the entire area. Keep in mind that there are accommodations in remote locations as well as major Vanuatu resorts so your choices are almost as unlimited as the places to see and things to do. For a vacation of a lifetime, explore the spectacular beauty that is Vanuatu.
